Crude oil prices provided some relief to the market but were not enough to prevent the benchmarks from closing lower.

Brent crude fell 1.5% to around $98.9 a barrel, moving below the key $100 level. It had earlier risen around 2% during the session before reversing gains.

The decline came after a report by Japanese news agency Kyodo said Iran had offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US eases military pressure, raising hopes of a diplomatic path forward.

The market is closely tracking crude prices because a sustained decline could ease concerns around inflation, bond yields and corporate earnings.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, “The continued decline in crude oil prices, with Brent slipping below the key $100/bbl level, provided some relief to investors and helped the domestic market recover from intraday lows, although overall sentiment remained cautious.”

He added that expectations of renewed diplomatic efforts surrounding the Iran conflict and prospects of improved Saudi oil shipments had eased concerns over inflationary pressures, while positive global cues also supported the market.

The broader market remained under pressure, although the decline was less severe in some segments.

WEEKLY EXPIRY, DERIVATIVES RULES IN FOCUS

Tuesday’s session also marked the NSE’s weekly derivatives expiry.

Market participants have been watching the regulator’s proposals to overhaul the derivatives settlement framework. According to the market commentary provided, most participants expect the proposed changes to help curb expiry-day volatility.

The expiry added another layer of activity to a market already dealing with geopolitical uncertainty, changing crude prices and concerns over global interest rates.

Nair said sectoral performance remained mixed, reflecting selective risk appetite among investors.
