Meteorological department’s nowcast put Chennai under a yellow alert. There could be moderate rain and thunderstorms until October 21. Residents are advised to stay prepared as the weather conditions may lead to isolated heavy rainfall in the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts isolated heavy downpours on October 18, 20, and 21 in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal
Over the next week, Chennai is expected to experience partly cloudy skies, with the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning, along with light to moderate rain from October 17 to 21. Daily temperatures are anticipated to range between 33°C to 34°C during the day and 25°C to 27°C at night. The possibility of thunderstorms and rain remains consistent for the first five days.
A depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the North Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai, in the early hours of October 17. In the wake of this storm, isolated very heavy rainfall is likely to affect parts of Tamil Nadu, South Andhra Pradesh, and also very heavy rainfall over Kerala and South Interior Karnataka today.
Additionally, the IMD warns that precipitation may continue to impact parts of south interior Karnataka until October 22, with further rainfall expected in Kerala and Mahe on October 22 and 23. Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the weather conditions develop.
In its nowcast update, the IMD predicts light rain for Chennai. The Tamil Nadu yellow alert affects seven districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry.
