India among 5 countries with largest number of people living in poverty: UN report

India is among the five countries globally with the largest number of people living in poverty, according to the UN report that said 1.1 billion people, over half of them minors, live in acute poverty worldwide. The latest update of the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released on Thursday by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) based at the University of Oxford.

Govt receives 44 bids in tenth round of commercial coal mine auction

The government on Friday said that 44 bids have been received for 67 coal blocks put for sale under the 10th round of commercial mines auction. A total of 44 bids were submitted in physical form. The coal ministry in June put on sale 67 coal mines for auction under the 10th round of commercial mines auction.

BJP president JP Nadda meets religious leaders in Mumbai

Tata Steel, Tenova partner for electric arc furnace at Port Talbot plant

Tata Steel signed a contract with Italy-based Tenova on Friday for an electric arc furnace at its Port Talbot plant in Wales, weeks after Britain’s biggest steelworks ended blast furnace-based production. The closure of the last blast furnace at Port Talbot, once the largest steel works in Europe, was the culmination of decades of decline in Britain’s steel industry, which has struggled to compete with low-cost imports.

Haryana govt implements sub classification of Scheduled Castes

In its first meeting, the Nayab Singh Saini-led Haryana Cabinet on Friday announced that the state government would implement, with immediate effect, the Supreme Court’s order on the sub-classification of Scheduled Castes (SCs). The move, a first in the country after the apex curt order, is intended to further consolidate the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Dalit outreach in the state

BRICS not anti-West, only non-West, says Russian President Putin

Days ahead of the BRICS Summit in his country, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday asserted that the grouping is not anti-West but just “non-West”, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this observation. At an interaction with a select group of foreign journalist here, he slammed the US and western nations for backing Ukraine in the war with Russia.
